A 24-year-old man, an alleged member of Sunder Bhati gang, has been arrested for allegedly shooting at a transgender on January 20, the police said on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal said the accused has been identified as Sagar alias Lampak, a resident of Trilokpuri, who joined the gang about one and a half years ago after being beaten up by local boys.
The police said that they received a call at Hazrat Nizamuddin police station on January 20 at 12.38 a.m. stating that a woman has been shot at near Barapullah flyover. When the police reached the spot, they were informed that the woman was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre by a passer-by. At the hospital, the person was admitted with gunshot injury in her abdomen. A case on charges of attempt to murder was registered.

On Monday, the police claimed to have received a tip-off that persons involved in the firing incident would come from Barapullah flyover and go towards Moolchand Hospital.
A trap was laid and the accused was arrested, Mr. Biswal said.
During interrogation, Sagar allegedly told the police that he and his accomplice Chandra gave lift to the transgender who pretended to be a woman. “When they reached near the flyover, they got into an altercation. Sagar whipped out a pistol and shot at her in the abdomen. They threw the transgender out of the car and fled,” the officer said.

Mr. Biswal said the accused also tried to destroy evidence by parking his bloodstained car at a mall in Gurugram as he allegedly thought that “keeping the car would be risky around Republic Day”.
The police claimed to have recovered the car, two pistols and five live cartridges from his possession. The cops are looking for the other accused who has been absconding since the incident.
