Killed due to property dispute

A man was arrested for allegedly strangulating his 82-year-old father-in-law over a property dispute in Bindapur on Sunday. The 54-year-old accused turned himself in at Bindapur police station nearly seven hours after allegedly committing the murder at the victim’s house.

Vijender allegedly told the police that the motive for murder was property dispute with his father-in-law Indra Singh, which started a few months ago. Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-west) Surender Kumar said the accused was arrested following his confession. A police team then rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

Vijender disclosed that the victim was alone at his residence at the time of the incident and that he murdered him around 8.30 a.m.. He allegedly spent the next few hours at the house wondering about his next move before eventually deciding to turn himself in.

At the centre of the dispute between them was a house owned by Singh. The property is said to be worth around ₹70 lakh.

A police officer said Singh wanted to give the house to his grandson [his son’s son] Hemant. Coincidentally, Vijender’s son is also named Hemant.

A month ago, Singh approached the police with a complaint that Vijender, his wife and son Hemant had tricked him into transferring the property papers in Hemant’s name.

Transfer documents

“Singh trusted Vijender and asked him to get the transfer documents made. Vijender allegedly tricked him to get the property registered in his son’s name. When Singh found out, he approached us and we booked Vijender and his family for cheating,” said the other officer.

Vijender was then arrested and sent to jail for 26 days before being released on bail. He had, according to the police, been planning to murder his father-in-law as revenge for sending him to jail and also to retain the property.

“We have booked him under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigations are on,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
