A Delhi court has acquitted a man of repeatedly raping a destitute woman from Odisha and pushing her into prostitution. The court rejected the victim’s accusations on the ground that it was not believable.
The victim had arrived in the Capital along with another woman who had met her at the Rourkela Railway station and advised her to go to Delhi to earn money.
When the victim reached Delhi, the accused Sonu alias Sheikh Sonu met her at a Delhi station. As she had nowhere to go, Sonu took her to his house in Central Delhi, the victim stated in her complaint. She also said that she thought Sonu was a woman as he was dressed up like a female. Sonu also admitted this before the court.

In her complaint to the Nabi Karim police, the victim alleged that Sonu confined her at his rented accommodation and raped her repeatedly.
After a few days, he handed over the victim to a woman named Rama, who forced her to have sex with two men and paid her Rs.650 for it, the complaint further said.
However, the victim in her evidence said that she herself had asked for help from Sonu. He told her to accompany him to his house and she went to his house along with him.

“It is apparent on bare perusal of the statement of the victim that Sheikh Sonu neither induced her to accompany him to his house nor forced her to accompany him to his house. Rather, it is the prosecutrix who herself asked for help from him and he told her to come to his house,’’ Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja said.
In her cross-examination, the victim said that Sonu used to take her to beg in trains. Stating that the victim never tried to make her confinement and rape at the hands of the accused public, the court dismissed her charge of being confined by him.
