Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday reviewed the “security and safety” measures for women in the Capital during a meeting with women NGOs.
During the meeting, attended by leading NGOs and women’s right groups, including Delhi School of Social Work, Jagori, Pratidhi, Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies, Justice Sunanda Bhandare Foundation and Safe Cities UN Women, several senior Delhi Police officers were also present. The NGOs alleged that the problem of sexual harassment in public transport still existed and there was a need to take effective measures to curb this menace. Bulbul Dhar James, in-charge of the Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies, emphasised that ‘gender sensitisation’ should be a continuous process and also highlighted that even women in police when off duty should be provided transport to reach their homes as they also face harassment.
At this, Mr. Jung stressed that wider publicity should be given to the new laws amended recently and which provide for harsh punishment against offenders. Fear of law must be generated among the offenders by the publicity campaign and by prompt action on the ground by police officers, he said. The L-G said even minor incidents must be registered and the offenders must be brought to book by applying stringent sections of the law. The NGOs were also requested to identify crime prone areas and hang-out places where rowdy elements gather and indulge in various offences.
