Lawyer files sedition case against students in Ramjas incident

Says they raised anti-India slogans following withdrawal of permission to organise a seminar

A lawyer has filed a complaint in a court here seeking directions to the Delhi Police to lodge a sedition case against certain students for allegedly raising anti-India slogans at Ramjas College on February 21.

Complainant Vivek Garg alleged that the students had raised the slogans following withdrawal of permission to organise a seminar called “Unveiling the State: Regions in Conflict” by the college principal.

‘Anti-national activities’

Video clippings and copies of newspapers attached with the complaint disclosed that anti-India slogans — “Kashmir Maange Aazadi, Bastar Chahta Aazadi and Hum Kya Chahte Aazadi” — were raised on campus by students belonging to All India Students’ Association , Students’Federation of India and others.

The complaint further alleged that the students had indulged in “anti-national activities” in the name of freedom of speech.

Mr. Garg said among the people invited to speak at the seminar was JNU Ph.D scholar Umar Khalid, who was booked for sedition last year for allegedly raising anti-India slogans.

‘Organisers misled college’

The lawyer also alleged that the organisers of the seminar misled the college administration on the proposed participants at the seminar and obtained the permission unlawfully.

The complaint was on Tuesday taken up for hearing by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Satish Kumar Arora at Tis Hazari courts, who marked it to Metropolitan Magistrate Abhilash Malhotra. Mr. Malhotra is likely to consider it next Monday.

Court asked to monitor

Mr. Garg urged the court to direct the Maurice Nagar police station SHO or any other investigating agency to lodge an FIR for sedition, waging or attempting to wage war, or abetting the waging of war, against the government, criminal conspiracy and other charges under the Indian Penal Code. The lawyer also urged the court to monitor the probe.
