Khattar’s convoy kills pedestrian

A 35-year-old resident of Nilokheri in Karnal was killed when he was hit on Monday night by a speeding police vehicle which was part of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s convoy on National Highway No 1. Two police personnel travelling in the Police Control Room van also sustained minor injuries. The incident happened when Mr Khattar was travelling from Chandigarh to New Delhi late on Monday night. As his convoy reached Taraori, a pedestrian came in its way and was knocked down by the vehicle. The victim, identified as Satpal Kashyap, a resident of Takhana village in Nilokheri, and two police personnel – Assistant Sub-Inspector Mann Singh and constable Ravinder – were taken to the Trauma Centre in Karnal where the pedestrian was declared brought dead.

Later, Mr Khattar announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. He said it was a sad and unfortunate incident and efforts would be made to ensure that such accidents do not recur.

Health Minister Anil Vij and Amrinder Singh, Officer on Special Duty to Chief Minister, also visited the house of the victim. Mr Vij expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and announced an additional compensation of Rs 5 lakh. The District Red Cross Society, Karnal, will also give a financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to his family taking the overall compensation to Rs 11 lakh.

Mr Vij also went to Trauma Centre at Kalpana Chawala Medical College to know about the condition of the two police personnel.
