Journalist fights off molesters in Delhi, catches one

The 25-year-old woman was returning home when a rickshaw-puller and his relative saw her walking alone and passed lewd remarks at her and tried to molest her.

A 25-year old woman journalist working with a leading news channel was molested in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Phase-I area on Thursday evening.

According to the police, the victim fought back and managed to catch one of the attackers.

She later handed him over to the police with the help of locals. The incident occurred when the journalist was on her way back home around 7 p.m.

“A rickshaw-puller and his relative saw her walking alone and passed lewd remarks at her and tried to molest her. The victim initially ignored them but they continued making obscene gestures and even tried to attack her. The girl fought back bravely,” said a senior police officer.

Hearing the commotion, some locals rushed to help the victim. She caught hold of one of the attackers. They were later identified as Shafiq and Fantoos.

“Shafiq is a resident of Begusarai in Bihar and had been living in East Delhi for the past two years,” said a police official.

The police reached the spot and arrested Shafiq, but Fantoos had fled from there by then, said the officer.

A case of molestation and outraging the modesty of a woman has been registered at the Pandav Nagar police station. Efforts are being made to nab the other accused. (With PTI input)
