JNUSU continues protests at Freedom Square

Students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday continued their protest against the college administration by conducting a “cultural resistance programme” at Freedom Square, where poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz was recited.

Mandatory attendance

The students had on Saturday and Sunday night organised protests at the Administration Block against the newly introduced rule of mandatory attendance.

Students removed the potted plants that were placed by the administration on the steps leading to the Administration Block after banning protests within 100 metres of the building and claimed they had “reclaimed” Freedom Square.

The students have been calling for the removal of Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar and have started a campaign titled “Jagdesh Kumar is not my V-C”.

High Court orders

In response, the university has sent letters to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) leaders and the JNU community asking them not to carry out protests near the Administration Block as they are in violation of Delhi High Court orders prohibiting any kind of protests within 100 metres of the administrative building. The university also threatened to take action against JNUSU.
