Jeweller foils armed robbery attempt

June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - New Delhi:

A jeweller averted a robbery at his showroom in East Delhi by fighting off an armed assailant forcing him to leave a bag containing a weapon and ammunition behind over the weekend.

The incident occurred in Vishwas Nagar where the victim, identified as Mohit Verma, lives with his family. He runs a jewellery shop on the ground floor of the same building. Mr. Verma was inside his shop when, around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, four men barged into his showroom. One of them, Mr. Verma later told the police, shook his hand while another placed a black tourist bag on the counter and ordered him to fill it with all the valuables he had.

“Mr. Verma requested the men to wait for a moment before he could begin filling their bag with jewellery which prompted the assailants to point firearms at him,” said a senior police officer. “He then managed to jump out of his showroom through a window and enter his house . One of the robbers tried to obstruct him, but Mr. Verma was able to push him away and managed to exit,” the officer said. Once outside, he began screaming to draw the attention of locals who contacted the local police.

When he returned to his showroom, Mr. Verma found that the robbers had forgotten to take the black bag. The bag contained two pairs of surgical gloves, a country-made pistol, and live cartridges.
