Accused was planning attacks on Republic Day, say police

The Delhi police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a member of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) on charges of planning terror strikes in the Capital during Republic Day celebrations.

Abdul Latif Ganai alias Umair alias Dilawar was arrested on January 20 from the Rajgath area in Central Delhi, they said.

The arrest was made after a tip-off that a JeM terrorist, the mastermind behind a series of grenade attacks in Srinagar recently, was planning similar strikes in heavy footfall areas in Delhi, an official said.

Incriminating material

Dilawar was arrested with incriminating material in his possession, he said.

A team rushed to Jammu and Kashmir and recovered two IED/grenades.

It also arrested another terrorist, Hilal, from Bandipora who had carried out a recce of target areas in Delhi.

Information about the module was shared with the Srinagar police, who later arrested terrorists involved in grenade attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. Dilawar worked with Jaish-e-Mohammad for about a year.

Grenade strikes

He was tasked by Abu Mauz with carrying out grenade strikes in Srinagar.

In the past, he has been arrested in cases of stone-pelting.
