NGT directs the Department of Animal Husbandry

The tribunal was hearing a plea by an animal rights activist seeking directions to shut down illegal dairy units in the Capital.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday directed the Department of Animal Husbandry of the State government to conduct an inspection of dairy farms in the Capital after a plea alleged increased pollution due to dumping of animal carcasses and other material into the Yamuna.

A Bench, headed by NGT Acting Chairperson Jawad Rahim, observed, “Have you seen the condition of cows in the city? They have been put in a horrible condition. These animals are not fed properly and not given medical care. They eat plastic and other rubbish items from waste dumps, which ultimately affects human health. The polluting dairy farms should be shut down.”

The authorities have been asked to submit the report by July 19. The green panel further asked the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, the Delhi Police and the State government to provide assistance and protection to the inspection team.

The civic bodies in the Capital have been asked to file a “jurisdiction-wise detailed list” of the dairy farms operating in the city.

The directions came while the tribunal was hearing a plea filed by animal rights activist Nuggehalli Jayasimha seeking directions to shut down the illegal dairy units in the Capital.

The plea had alleged that the dairy owners are not complying with the existing environment and solid waste management rules.
