In a first, 35-year-old man booked for bursting crackers

The Delhi police booked a man for allegedly bursting firecrackers in violation of the Supreme Court order, in east Delhi’s Ghazipur on Saturday.

This is the first such case in the Capital after the top court’s order, stating bursting of crackers allowed only for two hours during Diwali, came into force.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Pankaj Singh said 35-year-old Damandeep, works with a company deployed at Indira Gandhi International Airport for loading and offloading articles.

The officer said they received a PCR call around 9 p.m. stating that a few people were bursting firecrackers.

On reaching the spot, the complainant identified himself as 39-year-old Deen Bandhu.

“He said that initially, a few children were bursting crackers and he asked them not to. Later, Damandeep started bursting crackers. He asked him to stop but the accused paid no heed. He then burst crackers outside Mr. Bandhu’s house after which he called the police,” the officer said.

The police recovered remains of the crackers from the spot and booked Damandeep under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.

On being asked the place from where he bought the crackers, the accused allegedly told the police that he had some left from last year.

“During the search in his house, the remaining firecrackers were also seized,” the officer said.

On Friday, East district police recovered 150 kg firecrackers from Kondli and arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly selling them.

Mr. Singh said a secret information was received by officers of New Ashok Nagar police station stating that one Monu was selling firecrackers after which the place was raided.

During interrogation, he allegedly told police that he runs a shop selling instruments throughout the year but was also sells crackers during Diwali and was in possession of crackers from last year.

‘Green crackers’

On October 23, the Supreme Court ordered the manufacturing and sale of only “green” and reduced-emission or “improved” crackers.

The judgment reduced the time for bursting crackers during Diwali and other festivals to two hours — between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
