The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday rapped the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) for not approaching the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) before commissioning and installing a microwave waste treatment unit on its premises.

A Bench headed by judicial member Jawad Rahim asked the institute to file a detailed affidavit on why it did not approach the CPCB despite previous orders. The NGT came down heavily on the institute for approaching the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) instead of the apex pollution monitoring body.

The NGT had in January directed IHBAS to consult the CPCB for commissioning and installing the unit.
The Bench had said, “The CPCB is directed to consider the particulars of the microwave-based treatment unit to be installed and advice the institute regarding the proposed installation of the unit.”
Dismissing the “so-called compliance report” filed by the IHBAS, the NGT asked the institute to file a proper one within 10 days. The directions came while the green panel was hearing a plea filed by a Delhi resident, who has alleged that the institute was handling biomedical waste in an unscientific manner.
