The family claimed that Sarita’s in-laws demanded dowry even after two years of marriage. Her father Dharamveer said he had given Lavneet a luxury car, an SUV and cash at the time of marriage. He said her in-laws later demanded a sedan.
Mr. Dharamveer added, “They recently wanted ₹2 crore and a plot. They tortured Sarita over these demands till September 28, when I received a call from someone regarding her suicide attempt. They must have strangled her and tried to cover it up. I took her to a hospital. Her in-laws never came to see her.”
Greater Noida Police station SHO Dharmender Sharma said, “The accused have been booked under Sections 498A [husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty] and 304 [punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder] of the Indian Penal Code.”
