: The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to initiate a meeting of all the agencies concerned through the Secretary or a nominated officer, and submit a proposal to the court for allocation of specific funds for implementation of an intelligent traffic management system in the Capital.
Hearing a public interest litigation initiated on its own on air pollution in Delhi, a Division Bench of the court suggested that the use of helicopters could be started in the Capital for traffic management, and asked for a specific timeline for acquisition of equipment in order to manage road traffic with modern technology.
The Bench, comprising Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, expressed concern over the huge loss of fuel due to idling traffic at intersections and jams, and asked both the Centre and the Delhi government to come out with a plan to address the issue.

“Even as the traffic police have been trying to deal with the overwhelming traffic situation in Delhi, a lot more needs to be done,” observed the court. The Bench also saw a presentation given by the traffic police on the traffic management mechanisms employed by it in the city.
