HC questions failure to pay ₹1 crore to slain cop’s kin

May 05, 2018 01:46 am | Updated 01:46 am IST - New Delhi

Why was compensation of ₹1 crore not paid to the kin of the cop who died in line of duty in 2014 even after the ex gratia was announced by the then Lieutenant-Governor with much “fanfare”, the Delhi High Court asked the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government on Friday.

“There was all this fanfare that ₹1 crore would be paid. Then why was it not paid,” Justice Rajiv Shakdher asked, while issuing a notice to the State and the Centre seeking their stand on a plea moved by the slain constable’s wife for grant of the promised compensation.

The court sought the stand of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Delhi government and the L-G.

The issue pertains to the death of police constable Jagvir Singh. He was allegedly shot dead by a gang of five burglars in outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar on October 13, 2014, when he and another constable tried to nab them around 1.30 a.m. All five accused were later arrested by the police. A petition by Singh’s wife Anju Devi stated the two policemen had found guns in the pockets of two of the alleged burglars and confiscated them.
