HC notice on plea against NIFTEM appointment

: The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Centre and the University Grants Commission (UGC) on a writ petition challenging the appointment of Vice-Chancellor of the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), situated at Sonipat in Haryana.

The Teachers’ Welfare Association of the institute, which is a deemed university, said in its petition that the appointment was made in contradiction of the UGC regulations prescribing minimum qualifications for the post.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath, issuing the notices, listed the matter for further hearing on July 7.

The petition said that after the Ministry of Human Resource Development gave the status of university to NIFTEM in 2012, its Director was given the charge of Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor without any notification for the post.

According to the petition, the Vice-Chancellor should be from an academic background and a person who fulfils the eligibility criteria laid down by the UGC and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
