After a long day at work, Kapil Madan doesn’t head home to Ghaziabad. Instead, the bank employee goes to a corner of a nearby street and starts work all over again.
For the past five months, Kapil has been selling a unique product from a small table at the T-point of Kotla Road near ITO. The ‘moong dal pizza’ he sells has only one thing in common with the popular Italian food — its shape. The fluffy bread, soaked in butter and served with homemade chutney is a simple yet filling meal at Rs.50 per plate.
Kapil, who works in back-end operations at a bank in ITO, said he got inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of “Make in India”. “Modiji’s naara is what prompted this. Also, I like cooking and doing something different,” he said.

From 5 to 9 p.m. after work, Kapil sells about 40 ‘moong dal pizzas’ every day.
“People initially stopped to ask about the ‘Make in India’ logo on my banner. But now they tell me they have never had anything like this. I’ve started getting repeat customers.”
He leaves his supplies and table at a small eatery overnight, but carries fresh batter when stocks finish.

On a rainy afternoon recently, a group of girls waited patiently for a plate of the hot pizza. After eating a few slices, they asked Kapil to pack the rest. “I liked it so much that I want to take it home for my family,” one of the girls told a beaming Kapil.
