A massive fire broke out in a plastic and cardboard factory in the Mayapuri area of West Delhi on Saturday morning.

“Thirty fire tenders were pushed into service immediately. By the time the fire fighters reached the spot, heavy smoke had filled the air. The flames had spread over a wide area and it took the officials six hours to douse them completely. The rescue work, that started around 8-30 a.m., went on till p.m.

Some fire officials were at the site till 6 p.m., also to ensure that no further explosion took place in the factory,” said a fire department officer.

Fire-fighters had difficulty in dousing the flames because the material was highly flammable. “Since it was a plastic factory, there was raw material which was highly inflammable. Loss of property is estimated to be worth lakhs of rupees, the exact amount, however, has not been ascertained yet,” said a police officer.

“Since it was early in the morning, there weren’t many people inside the factory. Whoever was in was able to come out on time and so causality has been averted,” the officer added.

The cause of fire has not been ascertained yet but we are assuming that it was due to a short-circuit, the officer said.
