Girls’ hostel fee: UGC passes the buck to Hindu College

Tells Delhi Commission for Women it has no role in the issue

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday told the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) that Hindu college authorities have to resolve on their own the issue of charging of higher fee at the girls’ hostel.

According to a DCW statement, the Executive Secretary of the UGC, P. K. Thakore, appeared before the DCW on Monday following summons issued by the latter on the issue.

Mr. Thakore told DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal that the issue is related to the college authorities and they will have to solve it on their own as “the UGC has no role in the matter”, the statement said.

Differences in fee

Ms. Maliwal has asked the UGC to meet the college authorities and pass a resolution in favour of the girls within 10 days.

Earlier, the DCW had written to the Human Resource Development on the matter. The ministry has asked the UGC for a report.

Referring to the difference in the hostel fees between boys and girls, Ms. Maliwal said, “This is a mockery of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign and accountability should be set on whoever is responsible for it.”

Earlier in the month, Anju Srivastava, principal of Hindu College was summoned by the DCW over the differences in the fees in the two hostels.

The college authorities had informed the commission that the girls’ hostel was constructed without any UGC aid and hence, the fees charged were also higher.
