Claim Sumit Gurjar was killed in a late-night fake encounter

Relatives of a wanted criminal, Sumit Gurjar (27), who was shot dead in an encounter in Greater Noida on Tuesday night, staged a protest on Mahamaya flyover here alleging that he was killed in a “fake encounter”.

They blocked the flyover, an important link connecting Noida with parts of south Delhi, causing traffic snarls up to Noida and Greater Noida Expressway.

Gurjar’s relatives denied his involvement in any criminal activity and alleged that the police had killed him in a fake encounter.

They arrived in the city from their native place Baghpat after learning about his death, but refused to take his body from the mortuary. Later, they moved to the flyover and blocked the movement of vehicles travelling from Noida to Delhi. Following the traffic jams, police teams swung into action to divert the traffic.

Manveer Singh claimed his nephew had gone to a market to buy seeds on September 30 when he was arrested. He said they were informed that Gurjar was in custody the following day. “We have promised a fair probe into the matter, but we have evidence against Gurjar. He was recently involved in robbing a cash van and killing two employees of a liquor firm in Greater Noida,” said Love Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar.
