A gang that duped unsuspecting residents of North-East on the pretext of selling them Rial currency notes has been busted following a tip-off, the police said on Wednesday.
When a police team swooped down on the suspects, one of them hid in a narrow sewer nearby, but was pulled out by the policemen. The two arrested suspects, Mintu and Bachchu, hail from West Bengal, but investigators said they are probing if there was any Bangladeshi support to the racket.
The police said Mintu and Bachchu had only three original Rial currency notes, but were telling their victims they had 1,245 Omani Rial notes.

“The gang would claim they had found the currencies hidden in a cot belonging to an elderly woman who had recently expired,” said Ajay Kumar Singla, DCP (North-East).
