The police on Tuesday claimed to have busted an inter-State gang of robbers and solved a robbery case reported by a south Delhi jeweller on November 26.
Waylaid and attacked
The police said a case of robbery was reported around 11 p.m. from Hauz Khas on November 26. Jewellery shop owner Amarnath and Sumit Kumar Raut, who works at a jewellery store in Masjid Moth, were on the way home.

Mr. Amarnath was carrying some gold ornaments in a bag at the time of the incident. They were intercepted by four men in a car, who hit the jeweller with a pistol butt and fled after snatching his bag.
The police scanned footage from 25 CCTV cameras installed near the spot where the incident happened. They spotted the car on a recording from a CCTV camera installed nearly one km from the crime spot. The car’s registration number was clear save for one digit.

“The details of the car were obtained from the Transport Authority in Ghaziabad. There were around 50 cars matching that description,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar.
The police finally zeroed in on the car and detained two persons. “They were identified as Bharat Saini and Tarun Kumar, both residents of Delhi,” said Mr. Kumar.
The accused told the police that they were in debt. Tarun’s in-laws live in Masjid Moth and he had observed Mr. Amarnath’s movements during his visit there.
Soft target
Considering Mr. Amarnath a soft target, he and Bharat hatched a plan to rob the jeweller. They contacted Kapil, a Meerut-based criminal. Kapil involved more people in planning the crime.
On December 15, four other members of the gang who were involved in robbery were arrested by Meerut police before the Delhi Police raided their hideout in Meerut. “The entire booty has been recovered,” said the police.
