Four held for trying to attack Kanhaiya

: The Delhi Police took four persons into preventive detention for allegedly trying to attack Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar during a march on Tuesday.

Mr. Kumar was leading a rally from Mandi House to Parliament House to demand the release of JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, when some people allegedly tried to attack him.

After verbal abuses were hurled at Mr. Kumar for his remarks on security forces, several JNU students had formed a human chain around Mr. Kumar and raised an alarm when four men charged the truck on which the student leader was giving his speech.

Three of the men were immediately captured by the police while the fourth managed to jump on to the truck. He, however, was whisked away by the police before he could get near Mr. Kumar.

No taking any chances, the police took the men to the Parliament Street police station. The cops have come under severe criticism failing to shield Mr. Kumar from attacks during a hearing at the Patiala House court last month.

A senior Delhi Police official said that the four persons have been put under preventive detention in view of law and order issues. They were later released.

Of the four ‘attackers’, one is a barber, one a hotel steward, one an insurance agent and the fourth person is a car dealer, police sources said.

Mr. Kumar was also allegedly attacked inside the JNU campus by a person, who later turned out to be a Ghaziabad-based builder.

The attacker had called out Mr. Kumar for an interaction while he was attending a lecture on nationalism at JNU’s Administration Block.

After a heated exchange, the attacker slapped Mr. Kumar.
