The fire was reported from south-east Delhi’s New Friends Colony on Wednesday afternoon.

A major fire broke out in a three-storey building in south-east Delhi’s New Friends Colony on Wednesday afternoon, the police said.

No injuries have been reported, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Chinmoy Biswal said the police control room received a call regarding the fire at 1.54 p.m. The building houses a food mart and coaching centre, among other offices.

“When the police reached the spot, the entire building was engulfed in flames. All roads leading to the building were closed as precautionary measure,” he said.

A fire official said a total of 24 fire tenders were pressed into service and six ambulances were called to the spot.

“It took nearly three hours to douse the fire, though the cooling operation continued till late evening,” the official said.

He said though the cause is yet to be ascertained, a short circuit is suspected to the reason behind the fire.

The building was searched after the fire was brought under control but no one was found inside, he said, adding that it was evacuated on time.

The police said the entire building has burnt but the amount of damage has not been calculated so far.

“A case under Sections 336 [act endangering life or personal safety of others] and 427 [mischief causing damage] of the Indian Penal Code has been registered,” Mr. Biswal said.
