Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday instructed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to establish night shelters specifically for women.
He issued the instructions after it was revealed in his fortnightly review meeting with Deputy Commissioners that very few homeless women use night shelters.
Taking into account the safety of women in the night shelters, the L-G has directed the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to audit for locations which do not pose threat to the residents.

“The DCs have been directed specifically to choose locations closer to construction sites where the migrant labourers work so that they do not have to travel long,” said an official who attended the review meeting.
Mr. Jung also demanded that the location of the centres should be separate from existing shelters and DC’s carry out baseline surveys in their districts to identify locations for the new shelters.
The DCs have also been told to free public land from encroachments so that it may be allotted to dispensaries, schools, hospitals and sports facilities. A plan to have a new girls’ school in every district would be completed using such land.

Water ATMs will be installed based on need based analyses of the districts. Also, services of ambulances will be improved in areas at a considerable distance from maternal health facilities. Clearance of garbage dumps in Wazirpur was flagged off at the meeting and the L-G has repeated his instructions of regular inspection and clearance of dumps.
The Deputy Commissioners have also been asked to identify weak structures that may crumble during monsoon. An action taken report on the various works has also been sought within a fortnight.
