Nursery admissions for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category this year has been paralysed by the upcoming elections in the Capital. Many people are not being able to get income certificates and other related documents necessary for applying under the EWS category as the staff in government offices are busy in election duties.
The situation is going to remain the same till at least February 10 when counting of the votes is scheduled to happen. Nursery admissions, however, will close in most of the schools by the first week of February. A number of people will lose out on their children’s admission in the EWS category this way.
“I have received many complaints from people telling me that they went to the Sub Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office to get an income certificate but the window for getting the certificate was closed and the staff told them that work will be done only after elections”, lawyer activist Khagesh Jha told

Mohammad Shahid, a parent applying for his son’s admission under the EWS category went to the SDM South East office and faced the same problem.
“We do not have an income certificate to apply for EWS category in nursery. When we went to the SDM office to get the certificate, the office window was closed and staff told us that they cannot do anything till the elections are over. We could not even get an acknowledgement slip which could prove that we have applied for a certificate”, Mr. Shahid said.
“People who had already applied for the income certificates are not able to collect the certificates and those who have to apply for new ones are not being able to apply”, Mr. Jha added.

Another parent, Munipal who had to face a similar problem in SDM Saket office said: “I went to SDM office to get an income certificate for applying in EWS category for my son but the window was closed. I requested the school to consider some other document but they did not. I will have to lose out on my son’s admission this year.”
