Residents on whose boundary walls CCTV cameras will be installed, as part of the Delhi government’s plan to instal 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras across the city, will have to provide power from their residential connection, which would be subsidised by the government.
Residents have to sign an undertaking and they cannot disconnect power to the CCTVs, said AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj.
A team, including the local MLA or his representative, and officials from the PWD, police, RWA and BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited), which is installing the cameras, is visiting different areas and urging people to sign the undertaking.

“In one spot, a maximum of four CCTVs would be installed and it would consume about 5.5 units of electricity. The government will give a subsidy of six units to the resident,” Mr. Bharadwaj said.
For instance, if the resident’s electricity bill states he/she has consumed 146 units, then six units will be deducted in the bill and he/she would have to pay only for 140 units.

“These are wireless CCTV cameras and the data will be transferred through SIM cards, but it has to be charged. We decided to go use power from houses to avoid a more power cables running across the colony. Also, a decentralised system is better as miscreants would not be able to disconnect it,” the MLA said.
An Outdoor Equipment box will be connected to the residential power connection and the CCTVs would be connected to the box. Mr. Bharadwaj said that the decision on where to instal the CCTVs were also taken by the team during visits to different areas.
In each of the 70 Assembly constitutencies about 2,000 cameras will be installed, according to the plan. AAP Tri Nagar MLA Jitender Singh Tomar, said that in his Assembly constituency, part of the process was done before the election and the rest is being carried out now.
“The survey is mostly completed in my area. Cameras have also been installed in two colonies,” said AAP Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti.
