New Delhi: Up to 50,000 black polyethylene bags for the disposal of animal remains were distributed by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, in view of up coming Id-ul-Zuha, on Tuesday.
The move follows a resolution by an Aam Admi Party councillor, Rekha Tyagi, passed in the Standing committee on August 9. It stated that the improper disposal of meat leads to birds and animals spreading the garbage around, leading to unhygienic conditions and increasing the possibility of disease. It demanded that in the same way that dry and wet waste is segregated, special plastic bags should be provided for the disposal of meat and people should be encouraged to dispose the waste properly. The resolution cited the practice of sacrificing animals at home during the upcoming Id-ul-zuha festival as a reason for the same.
According to a release by the corporation, councillors and municipal staff went from door-to-door distributing the bags. In total 45,000 bags were distributed in Shahdara South while 5000 wee distributed in Shahdara North. The civic body also informed that the Ghazipur slaughterhouse would also remain open for disposal of animal remains.
