DU prof resists snatching bid, dragged along road

Incident in North Campus; accused duo still at large

An assistant professor of law with Delhi University was dragged on the road by two bike-borne men while she tried to resist a snatching bid in North Campus last week. The incident was reported on Wednesday behind Miranda House.

In her statement, Rubina Nagra said the incident showed that there was a lack of safety in DU where a lot of women travel alone. Around 5.05 p.m. on the day of the incident, Ms. Nagra was on her way towards Vishwavidhyalaya metro station in a cycle rickshaw with a female colleague. When they reached Chhattra Marg, two men on a bike tried to snatch her bag. The men caught hold of the bag and drove on, taking along Ms. Nagra, who held onto her bag. She fell down from the cycle rickshaw and was dragged along the road. The bag contained her phone and some money, which the duo managed to snatch from her.

Ms. Nagra purportedly told the police that she was injured in the incident and the colleague she was travelling with informed the police. “Their conduct was pre-determined. It is a miracle I was not run over by another car on the busy road. The incident should be recorded in a CCTV installed in the vicinity,” her statement further said.

A senior police officer said that a case has been registered but the incident busts repeated claims by the Delhi Police that anti eve-teasing teams are deployed at various points in the campuses of Delhi University to take action and prevent students or teachers from crimes against them.
