A 26-year-old Gramin Sewa driver succumbed to injuries on Monday morning after being assaulted the previous night by a group of competitors over ferrying passengers in Uttam Nagar.
The deceased, identified as Naushad, lived in a jhuggi-jhonpri cluster. According to the police, the incident was reported to them around 12-30 a.m.
A police officer said Naushad was willing to give commuters a ride for a lesser price than his competitors and did so on the night of the incident. “This annoyed the other drivers. When he returned after dropping the passengers, he had a heated argument with one of his competitors Gajjan. Naushad initially beat up Gajjan but the latter soon returned with a group of men,” said the officer.

It is alleged that four to five men assaulted Naushad, caused injuries on his head and chest and left him in a pool of blood. A passer-by noticed an injured Naushad and informed the Police Control Room. The police team rushed him to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where he was given medical treatment. Soon after his admission in the hospital, a case of attempt to murder was registered.
In the early hours of Monday, Naushad succumbed to his injuries. The accused were then booked under sections 302 (murder) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
According to the police, a man hunt was launched for the accused on Monday morning on the basis of their description provided by the victim during his treatment. By afternoon, the police caught Vinod and Rahul, who are both in their 20s.
