Driver loses life trying to save jaywalkers in Delhi

A 24-year-old driver was killed while trying to save two jaywalkers in Connaught Place in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Ashwini Kumar, who hailed from Himachal Pradesh. Kumar was employed as a private driver to a businessman at Pandav Nagar.

“He was returning home from work when the incident occurred near B-Block in Connaught Place,” said a police officer.

According to the police, Kumar was speeding when he saw two men crossing the road. He tried to avoid hitting the jaywalkers, but lost control of the vehicle.

“The car was hit by another vehicle before it went on to the footpath,” the officer added.

Kumar was taken to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he was declared brought-dead. A case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence has been registered at the Connaught Place police station.
