Don’t pay inflated bills, says ex-MLA

Published - December 22, 2014 09:13 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Delhi Congress, on Sunday, held a demonstration against ‘inflated’ water and power bills at North-West Delhi’s Jahangirpuri.

Organised by the area’s ex-MLA Devender Yadav, the demonstration was addressed by Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Arvinder Singh, who alleged that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) had been sending inflated water bills to the consumers.

“The huge increase in the tariff of the drinking water bills has made the life of the people miserable, as they have been getting bills up to Rs.40,000. The area’s residents are frustrated also because the huge water bills also pertain to the period of the 49-day rule of the Aam Aadmi Party. This is illegal,” Mr. Singh said.

Mr. Singh asked how could residents of the resettlement colonies, with incomes ranging from Rs.5,000 to Rs.7,000 per month, pay water bills amounting to Rs.40,000? He said if the Congress was voted to power in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, it would ‘completely stop the present practice of charging service and sewage charges’ from residents offering them relief.

“I appeal to all of you to refuse to pay for these inflated water bills,” said Mr. Yadav. “If anybody comes to disconnect the meters, face them boldly, we are with you,” he added.

Mr. Yadav said that ‘this kind of injustice being inflicted on the poor people would not be tolerated by the Congress’. “The Congress is with you; we will face this injustice together,” Mr. Yadav said.
