After making a 650-metre-long tunnel between Jama Masjid and Lal Quila on the upcoming Heritage Line, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) surfaced at the Lal Quila metro station here on Thursday.
The breakthrough, which is on the ‘down line’, was achieved in the presence of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director Mangu Singh. While the maximum depth of the tunnel is 14 m., the internal diameter is 5.8 m. Another TBM is currently operational on the same stretch for the construction of tunnel on the ‘up line’ and is likely to make a breakthrough by October 2014. The casting of the segments has been done at the Mundka Casting Yard.
The ‘Heritage Line’ connects Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate and is 9.37-km-long. On June 26, the 3.23-km long Central Secretariat-Mandi House section was opened for public.
