An amendment that would allow the Delhi Jal Board to take over the installation of new water and sewer connections from consumers would be placed before the Cabinet soon, according to DJB officials.
Amending DJB Act
The Board had approved the amendment to the DJB Act at a meeting on June 1. Currently, the Act says that consumers have to get the delivery pipes laid by licensed plumbers at their own expense after getting the sanction for a new connection. According to DJB officials, this leaves scope for the network being compromised as well as leaks springing up.

For instance, officials said, the treated water supplied by the DJB can become contaminated if the pipes installed by consumers are not up to the mark or have not been maintained properly. Corroded pipes or improperly fixed connections can lead to the clean water becoming dirty before reaching the taps at the household-level.
A senior official said that the amendment would be put up before the Delhi Cabinet within a month, after which it would be tabled in the Delhi Assembly.
