The Capital is no stranger to visitors from the wild, with rescue of various kinds of snakes, including cobra, and other endangered animals being reported from different areas.
It is, however, rare for a nilgai to have managed to walk into the high-security Lutyens’ Zone and hold it at ransom for over five hours on a working day.
“Delhi has had its share of civet cats, snakes, mongoose, monitor lizards spotting. Habitat disturbance and rapid urbanisations forces these otherwise shy creatures to stray into human habitation. Most of them are too scared and bewildered to find their way back home,” said B.K. Gupta of the Central Zoo Authority.

He added that the public has to be told not to panic and leave the animal in a secluded place without harming it or trying to kill it.
“All rescue operations work on the principal that the animal is precious. We have rescued jackal, snake, civet cats, snakes, porcupines, leopards from the Delhi-NCR area. There is an urgent need to educate the public about wildlife spotting and rescue,’’ said Harshad Solanki of Wildlife SOS.
