The Delhi Jal Board says all residents of the Capital have access to drinking water, either through its piped supply network or its free tanker service.

“The entire population of Delhi is being given treated water. According to our assessment, 82 per cent of Delhiites have access to piped supply, while the rest get drinking water through the tankers,” said DJB Member (Water Supply) B.M. Dhaul.

He said as per the 2011 Census, 81.3 per cent of people in Delhi had access to piped water and in the past three years almost 150 unauthorised colonies have been added to the network.

“We are moving forward despite challenges like depleting groundwater resources and raw water not being augmented in years. We have recently commissioned two more underground reservoirs, which will supply water at a better pressure,” said Mr. Dhaul.

The Delhi Jal Board supplies 835 million gallons per day (MGD) of water to 1.80 crore consumers, while the city’s entire demand is 1,020 MGD.

The water utility says it is trying to rationalise supply so more parts of the city can be connected to the piped network.
