A 28-year-old youth, whose mother had caught two snatchers in East Delhi last month, was allegedly shot at by two bike-borne assailants in Nizamuddin area of southeast Delhi on Friday morning.

The victim has been identified as Ricky Ranjit Sahni, son of Avtar Singh Sahni. He is a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) professional and had taken part in various national and international events.

His mother Laimayum Khulna Sahni (49) originally hails from Manipur and works as a choreographer. On June 27, she had displayed rare courage when she caught two snatchers in East Delhi and handed them over to police.

The incident took place when Ricky Ranjit Sahni was on his way to a gym in South Delhi where he works as an instructor.

“As he reached near Nizamuddin on his motorcycle, two bike-borne assailants, who were wearing helmets started following him and fired two shots at him. While the first shot missed him by a whisker, the second bullet hit him in his leg,” said a police official.

The officer also said that after the incident while the assailants fled, Sahni was taken to a nearby hospital where he is said to be out of danger.

Sahni is trained in Muay Thai, Kick Boxing and Wushu and has taken part in various MMA events in India and abroad.

“Although the attackers have not been identified in connection of the attack on the youth, there are reasons to suspect that it could be an act of revenge for the courageous act of his mother. We are investigating the case from other angles as well,” the official said.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections and efforts are on to identify and nab the accused.

The incident had taken place around 3:30 pm on June 27 when the 49-year-old woman was returning from Kailash Hospital Karkardooma to her home in Sadbhavna Apartment in East Delhi on her scooty when two men on a bike snatched her gold chain.

The woman had followed the two snatchers for half a mile, caught them with the help of locals and handed them to police.

The two goons, identified as Rashid Islam and Akram Islam, both in their late twenties were arrested and later sent to Tihar.
