In the wake of the arrest of a police constable for allegedly using e-mail accounts of authorised officers to send out requests to mobile phone service providers to garner call detail records of several persons, including Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, the Delhi Police plan to take a series of precautionary measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
It is learnt that senior officers are considering installation of a biometric system for identification of authorised persons by the assigned computer before they are able to send requests to service providers for call records of people suspected to be involved in any criminal activity.
The biometric system would identify the person concerned through fingerprints.

Once the biometric system is introduced, the Internet Protocol addresses of computers allotted to authorised officers would also be communicated to the service providers for authentication.
“It is right now at the planning stage. Once the decision is taken, a proposal will be sent to the Union Home Ministry for clearance and procurement of the biometric system,” said a senior police officer.
