Delhi govt schools get over 5,000 new classrooms

Over 5,000 newly constructed classrooms in Delhi government schools across the city were inaugurated on Saturday by AAP Ministers and MLAs. A total of 5,695 new classrooms were inaugurated, making it the biggest expansion of school infrastructure, as per a Delhi government statement.

Second phase

Speaking at the inauguration of classrooms at a school in Patparganj, Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia said another 2,500 to 3,000 classrooms would be ready by next month, completing the first phase of the project.

In the second phase, another 10,000 classrooms would be added in the next year-and-a-half, Mr. Sisodia said.

Currently, there are about 30,000 classrooms in about 1,000 schools.

Addressing students and parents, Mr. Sisodia said, “At one school I visited in Karawal Nagar, there were 174 students in one classroom when there should have been 40 or less. In another school, there were five different classes going on in one hall.”

He added that the new classrooms would help reduce the number of students in one classroom. In addition, he said, 200 new schools are also being made.
