Published - November 23, 2012 10:03 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Transport Department of the Delhi Government has decided to increase the limit of additional permits to be issued by it for new three-wheeler scooter rickshaws (TSRs) to 35,000 in order to overcome the problems associated with the current scheme of allotment.

A statement by the Delhi Government said while the Supreme Court has granted permission to allot 45,000 more permits, the Department has enhanced its own limit to 35,000. It said among these, 17,675 permits will be issued under the General category, 9,450 to Other Backward Classes, 5,250 to Scheduled Castes and 2,625 to Scheduled Tribes.

The Department said it has issued a public notice in this regard for the information of the public so they can buy new TSRs. “This will eliminate the illegal trading of TSR and high handedness of financiers, who charge exorbitantly high interest rates or illegal premium from the buyers,’’ said an official.

The Transport Department said a special feature of the new scheme is that all new TSR would be required to be fitted with integrated GPS/GPRS fare meters that are duly certified by the Weights and Measures Department of the Delhi Government.

These TSRs, fitted with GPS/GPRS, would be connected with the Operation and Command Control Centre (OCC) of the Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS) so that they could be tracked at all times. The new fare meter in these TSRs would also come fitted with a printer and the passengers would be able to get a printed receipt for the amount of fare paid. This, the Department said, was as per the recommendations of the empowered Group of Ministers of the Centre which had dealt with the issue of installation of GPS/GPRS in para transit vehicles to ensure safety of passengers.

Now, the Delhi Government said, any willing eligible citizen would be able to buy a TSR under the scheme and be able to register with any zonal authority -- Burari, Surajmal Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan or Raja Garden -- for obtaining a permit.
