A Delhi Police constable allegedly shot at and injured a 25-year-old man following an altercation over some issue inside the police residential complex at Jagatpuri in East Delhi on Sunday. The policeman has been arrested along with his accomplice.
The incident took place around 10-30 p.m. when Constable Ranbir Tomar, who is posted with the Jagatpuri police station, was allegedly having drinks with Udayvir and Rakesh, an auto-rickshaw driver. “They had gathered in a police barrack located on the third floor of a building inside the residential complex,” said an officer.
While they were in an inebriated state, an altercation broke out between the police constable and Rakesh. In a fit of rage, the constable whipped out his service firearm, trained it on the auto-rickshaw driver and pulled the trigger. The bullet pierced the victim’s jaw and exited through the head. He immediately collapsed on the floor. Hearing the gunshot, the neighbours rushed to the spot. While Ranbir was detained, Udayvir fled from the spot. Rakesh was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where doctors described his condition as serious. They referred him to JPN Hospital, where he has now been admitted and is under observation. Doctors have not yet declared him fit for recording his statement.

“A case under Section 307 (attempted murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and Ranbir has been arrested. Preliminary inquiries have revealed that another person named Udayvir was at the spot when the incident took place,” said the officer. The second accused was arrested later. He is suspected to be a registered bad character.
An inquiry has also been initiated to ascertain how the accused persons were allowed to consume liquor in the police barrack.
The police said they are yet to ascertain what triggered the altercation between the constable and the victim. They plan to take the accused in remand for interrogation to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the incident.
