The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Wednesday set up an expert committee for banning the sale of acid in the Capital. The panel will also look into the rehabilitation of acid attack victims.
11-member panel
The 11-member committee will comprise police officers, lawyers and officials from various government departments, the DCW said, adding that the panel will be led by senior Supreme Court lawyer Rebecca John.

Apex court instructions
The DCW said in a statement, “The committee will research on compliance of various instructions issued by the Supreme Court and governments to prevent the sale of acid. The committee will also prepare a model programme for rehabilitation of attack victims and device strategies to bring them into the mainstream.”
The Commission said a legislation banning the sale of acid will also be formulated by the committee.

“The committee will also study best practices and policies devised in the country or abroad for rehabilitation of the victims,” read the statement.
Report inthree months
DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal added, “The committee will comprise various experts who have been working on these issues for quite some time. It is expected to give us a report inthree months. After studying the report, the Commission will send its recommendations to the government.”
