CPI to protest Delhi water, power tariff hike

October 27, 2012 11:10 am | Updated 11:13 am IST - NEW DELHI

The Delhi unit of the Communist Party of India has decided to organise protests across the Capital over the burning issue of water and power tariff hikes.

At a meeting of the party’s Delhi State Executive Committee, the sharp increases in electricity and water tariffs were discussed. It was decided that all district and other units of the party would immediately start agitations in their respective areas. The tariff, the CPI said, should not have been hiked till the time the Comptroller and Auditor General had conducted the audit of all the private power distribution companies. Since the provision of such an audit does not exist at present, several parties including the BJP have been demanding that it be started.

The CPI has also decided to organise demonstrations at the water supply offices against the sharp hike in water rates and proposed privatisation of water distribution.

The Executive Committee also discussed preparations for the Delhi Assembly elections due next year and emphasised the need for “broader unity” and for the Left to fight elections unitedly.

It was also decided that the CPI will fight elections against all the Ministers of the Delhi Government as also the Chief Minister as it felt that her government has not been able to fulfil the aspirations of the people.
