‘They were murdered in their sleep’

A couple was allegedly hacked to death on Friday by unidentified men in Greater Noida’s Jamalpur village, the police said on Saturday. The accused are suspected to be members of the Bawariya gang.

Victims Azad and his wife Vedvati were relatives of Rio bronze medallist Varun Bhati. A senior officer said, “They were murdered in their sleep. They lived in northwest Delhi’s Khajoori Khas but had recently come to their Jamalpur home.” Azad retired from the Delhi Jal board three years back.

Gagan, the nephew of the deceased, said, “There are signs of resistance. They were beaten before being stabbed. The criminals fled with cash and a licensed pistol kept in an almirah.”

The accused attacked another house, located a few metres away, at the same time. The second couple was beaten and locked in a room. However, they survived as the assailants heard someone enter the house and fled. Locals alleged the attacks took place at 1 a.m., but the police reached the spot only around 5 a.m.

Gautam Buddh Nagar SSP Ajay Pal Sharma said an FIR has been lodged and five teams are working on the case. Azad and Vedvati’s bodies were handed to the family after post-mortem. However, the family refused to cremate the bodies and protested against the police instead. They performed the last rites after assurances from senior officials.
