76-yr-old was mowed down on Friday

A Delhi Police head constable has been arrested for allegedly mowing down the 76-year-old mother of an IAS officer in Lutyens’ Delhi on Friday. The woman was rushed to Primus Hospital in Chanakyapuri here, where she succumbed to injuries.

Eyewitness plays role

Head Constable Chandra Bhan was arrested on Friday after an eyewitness informed the police about the vehicle’s registration number. The eyewitness, a woman who works as a domestic help in the area, also told the police that she had seen a ‘police’ sticker on the car.

She claimed to have seen Nirmal Devi, mother of Arun Baroka — Joint Secretary with the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation — being hit by a police car.

Mr. Bhan told the police that was heading home from his office in Chanakyapuri when the incident happened. He said he fled because he got scared. The police added that he tried to get the car repaired to erase evidence. The police then interrogated mechanics in the area, after which the driver were traced.

Confirming the arrest, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) B.K. Singh said the head constable has been booked for tampering with evidence and other relevant sections of the IPC.
