April 15, 2013 09:49 am | Updated 09:49 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A direct fight is now on the cards for the post of Chairman of the Central Zone of South Delhi Municipal Corporation with only the incumbent and Congress candidate Virender Kasana and Nationalist Congress Party candidate Chandra Prakash now remaining in the fray.

Chairman of the Election Committee of NCP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said while his party councillors Phoolwati Narwala and Dharamvir Awana have already been elected to the posts of Deputy Chairman and Member of the Standing Committee in SDMC, the fight for the post of Chairman of Central Zone is still on.

Overall, there are 30 members in Central Zone of which 11 are of the Congress, eight of the BJP, six of the NCP and one of the Samajwadi Party while the remaining two are Independents.

Mr. Kasana, who has earlier served as a member of the Delhi Development Authority, is a lawyer by profession. While he was the only Congress councillor to be elected Chairman in the elections last year, this time Mr. Bidhuri is trying hard to dislodge him.

The NCP leader has expressed confidence that the non-Congress parties would support the candidature of his party nominee.
