Gurugram woman accuses senior Congress leader's son of harassment; accused denies charges

Both are members of the email groups along with 343 residents of a posh residential complex in Gurugram.

A Gurugram woman has accused Nikhil Alva, son of a senior Congress leader, of sending her emails with “unwelcome sexual overtone using highly inappropriate and grossly offensive language” and has also accused the city police of delaying action on her complaint.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Mr. Alva at the DLF Phase-III police station in the city on December 4.

Mr. Alva, however, termed the allegations “false”. He said they followed a complaint he filed with the district registrar on November 30 against the woman on an internal RWA (resident welfare association) dispute in the housing complex where they lived. The woman approached the police with her complaint the same day, he said.

Mr. Alva alleged that the ''false'' complaint was filed to put pressure on him. His emails to the complainant were on an open email forum and never one-to-one. The FIR must also be seen in the context of his complaint against the woman for “illegal” modifications in her apartment and ''blocking'' the fire escape, he stated.

He accused the woman of making derogatory comments on him, his mother and family during exchange of emails over the past five years which, he said, were well-documented

The FIR accused him of repeatedly and maliciously targeting the woman for the past three years on various email groups, which were created to act as an internal platform for discussions on various issues arising in the posh residential complex.

Both the woman and Mr. Alva are members of the email groups that comprise 343 residents of the complex.

The FIR alleged that Mr. Alva did not mend his ways despite her clearly indicating disinterest and advising him to refrain from such activities. He cast false and incorrect aspersions on her character without verifying the veracity of the facts and also tried to character-assassinate her, it said.

Charge against police

The woman accused the police of acting under political pressure in not initiating any action, almost two weeks after the registration of the FIR. She said that it took the police five days to lodge the FIR in despite the fact that she lodged her complaint on November 30 with documentary proofs.

“Despite the lodging of the FIR, no action has been initiated so far. Every time I call the police station seeking the status of my case, the police are ready with an excuse. I am either told that the Investigating Officer is on a leave or assured that action is in the pipeline. It seems the police are acting under pressure as the accused is politically well-connected,” she said.

Gurugram police spokesperson Subhash Boken, however, denied her allegations. He said that a notice had been served on the accused to join in the investigation into the matter by December 17.
