The Delhi Congress strongly condemned what it claimed was an unprovoked assault on women members when the latter were taking out a peaceful candlelight march at India Gate to pay homage to the victim in the Moga molestation case on Thursday.

A Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) delegation is scheduled to meet Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to take up the issue and demand stringent action against the police and paramilitary personnel involved in the episode which is alleged to have resulted in serious injuries to 14 women Congress workers.

“Women cops without name plates and in civilian clothes unleashed a brutal attack on the women Congress workers even before they could take out their peaceful candlelight march at India Gate to pay homage to the Moga girl,” said DPCC spokesperson Sharmishta Mukherjee.

According to the DPCC, its chief Ajay Maken, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president PS Bajwa and All India Mahila Congress president Shobha Oza were to lead the said march, but security personnel, including the police, allegedly took the women workers into custody in addition to allegedly shoving and assaulting them on a bus en route for the Tilak Mag police station.

Ms. Mukherjee said a DPCC delegation, under the leadership of Mr. Maken, would meet the L-G to seek stringent action against the police personnel – including male police officials – who are claimed to have brutally assaulted the Congress workers.

“Several women workers suffered fractures and others, including Ms. Oza, suffered serious internal injuries. The BJP government at the Centre is acting like a fascist regime, terrorising women, instead of ensuring their safety and security,” Ms. Mukherjee said.
