A day after a woman student attempted self-immolation at Gurgaon over “poor” marks, the police have registered a case against the teaching staff for abetment to suicide and criminal conspiracy among other charges. Meanwhile, her condition is stated to be stable.
Based on the statement of Pinky Chauhan, who had set herself afire during a protest against the college management, the West Gurgaon Police on Tuesday registered an FIR under Sections 511, 306, 342 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code. “No one has been named in the FIR and the matter is under investigation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sangeeta Rani, adding that legal action would also be taken against the Pinky for attempting suicide.
The condition of Pinky, who sustained 60-70 per cent burns, is said to be stable.

Meanwhile, Haryana state secretariat of CPI-(M) has expressed anguish over the tragic incident of “self-immolation bid by a college girl student at Gurgaon while lodging protest against award of poor marks in examination by default of a private company to whom the contract of result preparation was given by Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU) authorities”.
CPI-(M) state secretary Inderjit Singh said in a press release that the blind drive for privatisation of education has started claiming lives of youth of Haryana.
He blamed the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Controller of Examination for spoiling the career of thousands of students by not listening to the pleas of students and non-teaching employees towards withdrawing the result preparation from private hands. “Therefore, higher authorities of MDU, Rohtak, and the college concerned should be booked under appropriate law for criminal negligence,” said Mr. Singh.
